Ice
We were driving in New Mexico on remote back roads searching for that night’s camp. I typically worry about getting lost when we are on such searches, so I was uneasy. Plugging in ITunes, we began to listen to Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue”. The world began to expand - we saw multiple herds of elk, and found a great campsite on the edge of a clearing. Buoyed by a good night, but running low on cold ice, we made our way out of the wilderness, and encountered a cattle watering tank. Here, we found this bit of bailing wire, and proceeded to investigate the tank - kept full by a modern solar pump while the old windmill lay on it’s side, abandoned. From this tank ran a small pipe that stretched across the clearing beyond our line of site. This tiny pipe, meant to deliver water somewhere, seemed out of place in this wild terrain. We lingered, then headed to the nearest town just in time to replenished our ice supply.
